HIV PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a safe and highly effective way to prevent HIV before you're exposed to the virus. When taken as prescribed, PrEP can reduce the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99% and also significantly lowers the risk from injection drug use.

PrEP is recommended for people who may have an increased risk of HIV and want an extra layer of protection. At WestsideMed, we offer confidential PrEP consultations and personalized treatment plans to help you choose the option that's right for you.

HIV PrEP Q&A

Who should consider PrEP?

PrEP may be right for you if you:

  • Have a partner living with HIV
  • Have multiple sexual partners
  • Do not always use condoms
  • Have been diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the past six months
  • Share needles or injection equipment
  • Want additional protection and peace of mind

If you're unsure whether PrEP is right for you, our providers can discuss your individual risk in a private, judgment-free setting.

How do I get started with PrEP?

Getting started is simple. During your appointment, your provider will:

  • Review your health history and risk factors
  • Perform an HIV test to confirm you are HIV-negative before starting PrEP
  • Screen for other sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • Check kidney function and other routine labs, if appropriate
  • Discuss the PrEP option that best fits your lifestyle

Most patients can begin PrEP shortly after their evaluation and lab results.
